i get this messege when tying to open a file a client sent me.
"data in file route1.rte is corrupt and needs to be manually recovered. Please contact Autodesk for support"
how do i do a manual recover?

I've seen this before when people send the file over the internet (upload) and for any reason the file isn't completely uploaded (the computer turned off before finishing, for instance). That means you downloaded an incomplete file and Revit won't be able to open it. Make sure the files was properly sent to you. If the problem still occurs after resending the file, I would sent it to support at Autodesk.

I just had this problem last week and had to send it to Autodesk. They were quick in getting it fixed. Just make sure you send them the Journal file too.
