View Full Version : display walls in different ways on same view?

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to set bearing walls to appear one way in plan view (filled; solid color) while showing non-bearing walls a different way (say, halftone)? I have looked at setting view discipline to coordination, but it seems to me like all the walls get treated the same way graphically.

Also, is there a place to find more info on the way the different discipline settings are intended to be used, and what the expected settings are, and if it is possible to alter them?

Two things to try....

1) Coarse Scale Fill

In any wall family, edit the type parameters. Under "Graphics" there are two parameters for "Coarse Scale Fill Pattern" and Coarse Scale Fill Color."

You can set your bearing families to have the same fill and color. These walls will only appear colored in the Coarse detail level views. Anything set to medium or fine will not show the pattern / color.

2) Filters

In the Visibility / Graphics window, there is a tab called "Filters." These filters are not unlike rules that you might set up in Outlook. Lets assume that you named all of your bearing wall families as "BEARING WALL TYPE XXX."

Within Filters, you can create a new rule where all walls with the family name starting with "BEAR" will have a specified cut pattern.

Personally, I like the second method, because it doesn't force my plan views to be set to a specific view detail level.

Best of luck,

Set up view filters to reflect the different wall types.

We have a range of filters set to wall type marks - both for construction drawings for different constructions (eg load bearing / non etc), and for working views where we want to make it obvious where different walls are (eg acoustic requirements).

Is there a way to show only part of a wall structure eg just the core section of the wall.

eg Arch have a block wall which is lined. The struc only want to see the block component of the wall (the load bearing portion)

note: we are multi-disc working in one model

Copy/monitor may work within the same model but that means I have two walls in one project - recipe for disaster I think.

No, you cannot show only part of a wall. As for the Copy-Monitor, it will work. As for the two walls, yes you will. But if the Structural pays attention, they can place their copied wall on a workset, that is off by default. Then its not a problem. Also, you'll have to watch the justification of the Architectural wall, since you are in the same model, it could cause the structural copy-monitor using a different style, to shift from the structural core of the Architectural wall.
