I'm curious if there is a way to change a setting or something. I occasionally work in Rhino. When I "print" in Rhino to pdf, the output of the file makes it a smaller file size than what AutoCAD would give me with the same settings (that I know of at least)

But one of the important things I am looking for is also when I "print" in Rhino, the output creates something that you can actually select anything that is text related, i.e. dimensions, titleblocks.

This is handy for me since occasionally I convert to an editable pdf where I have a much harder time in the AutoCAD generated file.

About the best way I can describe the situation I have or maybe think the problem is, is that AutoCAD prints a raster and Rhino prints a vector.

Am I missing something in my plot settings somewhere?

nope -- you're not missing anything.
the adesk supplied PDF printer is probably the least effective one possible for creating pdf files from drawings. you can chalk it up to a lack of interest in competing with the DWF format, poor customer service, incompetence, corporate politics, or whatever. Bottom line
is it's pretty poor at creating efficient, usable PDF files.

You could use DeskPDF, Acroplot, CutePDF, Bluebeam, or one of the many other PDF creation programs out there. for searchable text, I believe you'll have to use a TrueType font instead of an SHX format font file. For DeskPDF at least, the shx fonts are simply stroked and not interpreted as text.

Sorry, I really should have mentioned I use Acrobat to print pdf's. That would have been really useful in my OP to include that.

Does this change anything from your response though?

I feel I'm missing the most basic setting somewhere.

Nope, AutoCAD uses the minimum set of printing commands when communicating with a Windows Based printer driver (which is what's happening with Accrobat). No matter what you do SHX fonts won't become selectable text (even in DWF they're only a set of lines). BTW, are you sing the standard link AutoCAD makes to System Printers or did you create a PC3 file for this purpose? If the later is the case, you may have to adjust a setting, see attached (Accrobat should have similar setting).

As to the file-size problem ... try this: 1st make a DWF, then from DesignReview print to PDF. Usually makes a much smaller PDF.

Thank You irneb, the "Trye Type As Text" was exactly what I was looking for.

Half the size, selectable text.
