Hi All,

I remember seeing a Demo once, where the guy was able to create components for Wide Flange Steel shapes (beams and columns), by pulling from a steel table.

I'm looking at the Steel Structural Column component that comes with Revit, and it appears that I have to input dimensions manually.

Is there a nifty button or something that links to the Steel Shapes table? Is this something that's only available in Revit Structural?

Thanks in advance.

Follow up... I found this file, "W-Wide Flange-Column.txt."

It seems to contain a bunch of steel section sizes. Unfortunately, I don't know how to access it!

Load Family. Find the strutural family desired. You'll see a table from which you can select the sizes.

Hi Aaron,

I must be missing something. I can't find the table to which you're referring...

Is it in the Type Properties? There doesn't seem to be any new buttons, when I select the component.

Am I using the wrong component?

Bryan,

The dialog box you are looking for will show only when you are loading the family and not when you are inserting it into the project.

These text files are called "Type Catalog" and are very useful when your family has a lot of types and you just want to load one or two. If you look for "Creating a type catalog" under the Revit 2009 help file, you find more information about it.

I hope it helps.

Prior to 2009, the Type Catalog would appear in the File Open dialog box, below your browser window. Now in 2009, the type catalog only appears after you load the family.

I kind of liked the way it was before, personally. How are you supposed to know otherwise which families have a type catalog and which don't? We have several structural framing families that do not have type catalogs, so I have to remember which have them and which don't when I load something out of that folder.
