We have this issue with the bundle version of the Revit 2009 where you also get AutoCAD. When a user opens Revit they take 1 license away from the total availible. When the same user opens AutoCAD they take 1 license away from the total availible. Therefore, 1 user can occupy 2 licenses and thus creates an issue on other users not being able to get a license. Is this common or is there a problem with what we are doing? Any help would be greatly appreciated since you all know that the software is too expensive to buy licenses you do not need.

Thanks

Well it becomes a problem based on how many licenses you have and how many people are using AutoCad or Revit. Yeah it would be nice for the users to have either Revit or AutoCad open to ensure they aren't using up extra liscenses, unless they absolutely need to be in both. Otherwise the only other option would be to split them up or get more licenses which obviously is not the ideal situation at the moment for you.

Well let me explain another way. When you have a standalone version you can have both Revit and AutoCAD open at the same time with no problem.

Lets say hypothetically that we 20 total users and had 20 network licenses. If we had 10 users who are using Revit but have AutoCad open to reference previous work then the other 10 users would not be able to get a license of either program.

The Revit and Autocad installed on your system should both be using the same license. If it is pulling 2 licenses then something is wrong. I've seen threads before where someone installed Revit from the web download and didn't download the right one. Check to make sure you downloaded the Revit Series installer and not the regular Revit installer.

We had the same trouble and the license specialist from our reseller accesed our flex lm file and modified a string wich completely corrected the trouble.

I believe that this is the intended behavior for the suite licensing. You can use one application at a time. If a user has AutoCAD and Revit running on the same computer, it grabs one license for each. It would seem less than ideal, but that is the cost for getting a "deal" on the suite. If you want to run AutoCAD and Revit at the same time and only use one Revit license, you need to buy a separate license for each application.

I'm afraid that this is not correct. As stated by Troy above if you have the Revit/Autocad suite network licenced version each user ONLY USES 1 licence regardless of whether they have Autocad or Revit open or both open at the same time.
This is how it is intended to work.

Jason,
are you using both the Revit Suite 2009 install and Revit acad suite 2009 install? Or is your acad version older?

So do you need seperste licenses for each program? Because that is the way I understood it worked, but I don't pay much attention to it because we have more than enough.

Just to clear it up for everyone, if you purchase the Autocad Revit Suite, you only use 1 license even if both programs are open at the same time on one computer. If you are using 2 licenses then something isn't setup correctly.

You may want to contact your local Autodesk reseller or Autodesk directly to get assistance on fixing the problem.

My bad. Sorry for the confusion. You know what happens when I make assumptions. I am too cynical in my old age.
The cascading licensing scenario used with the series product(s) can be complicated and easily misbehaves if the license file is not set up correctly. I would definitely contact your reseller as a first step in getting it fixed.

Thanks everyone.. was away for a few days and am just catching up.

I will contact the reseller to see if they can do something.

What happens if you are Revit 2009 and Autocad 2008 ? how does the license / series bit work then ?
