Anyone care to take a guess when web update 2 might be released?
I realise that no one actually knows, probably not even Autodesk themselves
We are still getting annoying graphic card driver glitches with webupdate 1 on some of our pc's so that I haven't yet updated all our revit's.
I can only hang on for another few weeks or so before having to make the jump.
I know that as soon as I cave in and install webupdate 1 on all the pc's webupdate 2 will be released a week or so later.

I believe you were looking for this.... :veryevil:
Barring unforeseen circumstances, sometime around mid-September. This can always change in either direction, but that's our current project planning.
Cheers,
Kyle B
P.S: No, I'm not going to state a firm date, and let's not get into what we are or are not planning to change. Such issues need to be reported through your reseller or Subscription Support. We evaluate fixes against customer impact and development implications.

Will there be a dedicated 64 bit version with the next web update Kyle?

Ha Kyle,
do not mean to be rude, but mate, my "reseller" has never told me anything about Revit since the day I signed up.( and that was at Revit 4.5)
I mean come on man, they never even told me about the last version or the web update (or any previous version or build or anything else for that matter..I even had to find out about Revit 2009, from a 3rd party trade literature web site link by accident. I dunno what they get their money for but it sure as @%&!! isn't for giving me any support or advice.
I'd be happy to get a new reseller actually because this one must be laughing their heads off with the free ride.

You know better than to expect an answer to that question, :). Web Updates do not contain "new" functionality, just fixes to existing functionality, so I am able to discuss it more openly.
Something like a native 64-Bit version would constitute new functionality, so we could not release it as part of an update, nor could I publicly discuss future plans for releasing such a version. Either of those would require us to re-state our revenue as a publicly held company -> Not something that we like to do.
That is not to say that a 64-Bit could not be released at some point as a benefit to our Subscription Customers, as there are different legal restrictions involved in such an offering from us.
Like a good Product Manager, I have managed to fill half a page without actually answering the question (I should run for office).

Thanks Kyle for that political answer but otherwise good to know.
If you can put a push on it in your office I would really appreciate it as our Revit models are reaching the 400 megs range. Utilizing the OS system I believe would greatly improve the performance but I could be wrong.

I appreciate that you can't discuss future features because of Autodesk's policy regarding such matters, but this statement just isn't true. Can we please stop spreading this myth.

I guess our corporate lawyers and team dedicated to Revenue recognition oversight must be incorrect then.
If I make a statement about a future capability, and you go buy the product as a result of that statement, then we need to deliver that capability to you within the quarter or else we would have revenue recognition issue. Basically, we would have to pro-rate the revenue across multiple quarters until we actually delivered that capability. That is a costly task that raises concern with our investment community as well as incurring legal and accounting costs.
That's how it was explained to me by our corporate counsel, so that's the tune I'm marching to here. Trust me, I'd love to be able to talk about such things.
Cheers,
Kyle B

The story I've heard is that way back when, Carol Bartz stated in front of a user group that AutoCAD Release 13 was going to be released on a certain date. The folks back in the development group just about c***ped their pants because they knew there was no way it would be ready for prime time by then. But, since the statement had been made in a public forum, they had to either release it, or - as Kyle said - mess with their earnings statement.
I believe that was sometime in '94.
And we all know what happened with Release 13. (Or at least, us old-timers do)

Well, we could always take the position that the lack of 64 bit is in fact a BUG, and thus very appropriate to address in a Web Update! ;) Indeed, from a user perspective 64 bit in and of itself will give us exactly nothing as far as "new" functionality, it will simply address crashing of the existing functionality.

And yet, obviously internally accounting sets a date, and bug ridden junk still gets released on that date, ready or not. But because only users get hurt, not stock holders, it is all ok. Nice!

Why do Microsoft talk about new features of windows and release dates etc way in advance of their release?
Are they not in the same situation as Autodesk?

Targeting next week, barring unforeseen circumstances. Final stages of testing and preparing to release at the moment.
It's been a significant effort, as we are putting the finishing touches on our first Service Pack for the Revit Platform, rather than a full build...
Cheers,
Kyle B

I used to hate the idea of a service pack for Revit -- just give me the full meal deal, right -- but all that rendering data and all the families in a full installer... yikes: that's a lot of data.
The service pack route was probably inevitable...

Oh man -- I am really, really, really hoping that the display slowdown is fixed. Were it not for the new features of 2009, I would be still using 2008. It's so stinkin' fast compared to 2009!
And yes, I AM glad we're now going to service packs. Harder for first time users to jump on, but better for those of us who are already drinking Revitade ;-)

There is no longer a product simply called "Revit". Unless the Revit reunification has happened.:) Which Revit are we discussing here?

I was referring to all Revit Verticals. It would have been more correct to say "Revit Platform". I'll update my original post.
Cheers,

Thanks Kyle,
The Service Pack is a welcome change. The total dollar cost of all the users sitting and waiting for the rendering package to download must be a staggering figure. Waste comes in many forms that don't necessarily involve land fills.

Me too. We have not even upgraded to 2009 becuase of the speed issues. I have done a few SD models in 2009 for the improved rendering, but it is just too slow for production work as it currently stands.

Yep, not to mention the labor cost of implementing builds across many workstations.
Content is still a part of the SPs, however, as we need to be able to update content if needed. That doesn't mean that we ship the entire catalogs, but select pieces where we have identified quality issues.

Not to change the subject (Service packs, wahoo!) but why not download it once then transmit it over your network to the other computers? Thats what we do here...

I'm sure that is what I would do if there were more than 1 Revit license. Many of us are 1 or 2 person operations and the updates are very time consuming. The Service Pack is a welcome change.

Thanks for responding so quickly. A service pack scenario is welcome news. This should get all those "when are we upgrading to 2009" users off my back.

Folks,
I know you're excited here, but please, PLEASE wait until we formally announce the release. Yes, we are in the final stages of release. Yes, we have some elements live on our download servers, and if you wait a couple hours, you will have everything you need to successfully install the Service Pack.
You have not included the Service Pack installation instructions document, and I could not recommend anybody install it without that document.
It won't be long, I promise.
Cheers,

Kyle - Autodesk sent me a reply to my error report yesterday informing me that part of my problem could be related to not having the latest build/version installed.
"Dear RevitĀ® Architecture Customer:
We recently received an error report from you. While we have not yet determined the resolution to the error, we have determined that the latest maintenance update has not yet been installed for your product.
We recommend that you install this maintenance update to update your product, or contact your system administrator."
And they provided the link to WU2, which I installed. If it's truly an unfinished product then ADK needs to do a better job of coordination.
