is there any way to make the section view also the work plane
don't see it listed in the "specify a new work plane"
since this is normally the plane we want work on in a section view
surprized it is not listed

not directly. However you can draw a reference plane at the same location and name it, then it will be in the list of workplanes.
What are you drawing in section that you want to have the exact workplane of the section?

ok just created a WP over the section line in plan view
but are putting mostly dimensions in the section view
or should this be done on the sheets

Sorry Ray, I'm not sure I understood what you want...
Yes, dimensions should be placed in the section view and not on sheets, but what it has to do with the work plane you asked before?

Dimensions already go on the view cut plane of whatever view you're in.
Work planes are intended for creating 3D geometry.

second that. You should only need a workplane for 3d elements. Any annotations or detail items (really anything view specific) are automatically "on top" of the model geometry.

Be careful ... if you had to create or pick a work plane it was probably because you were trying to draw lines ... model lines .... You need to understand the difference between model lines and drafting lines. Model lines are 3d (show up in every view) and they require a work plane. Drafting lines are 2d and they are view specific.

i am mostly concerned with work plane and where is it if you do not use a ref plane.... was assuming this would where the section cut was
if you create solid forms in the section view without setting a plane
where is it being created
also, noticed that levels are ref planes why not section views
then the section cut would be one less ref plane that we need to create
I know.... cranky issue....

A level is a datum line, just like a structural grid line. There can be plan views and RCP views associated with those level datums, but the level is not a view itself. A section is nothing but a view. There is no datum associated with it. It has no dimensional relationship to anything in the model.
If you need to model something while in a section (or elevation), you can make the work plane be either a reference plane, or a grid line, or the face of 3D geometry.
