I want to render a 3d view but the render dialog option under the View menu is grayed out and inactive. What do I need to do to unlock this?

The render dialog is grayed out if you are not in a suitable 3D view. Just make sure you are actually in the 3D view, you can double check by the program header at the top of your screen, it should corespon to the 3D view.
I cant see any other way it would do that, so if it still doesnt work you could try creating a new 3D view by either creating from a camera in plan or go through view->new->default 3d view

I verified that I am in a 3d view and for good measure went ahead and created a view with camera. No luck, still can't call up the render dialog.

You may have no installed the rendering options, or your settings aren't linked to the fbx files. I would check your settings>Rendering tab to make sure you have the fbx file loaded. It should be in the program under Data>Rendering.
If this file is not there you may need to install the rendering part of Revit from the disc.

Also, just FYI, after correcting the settings you will probably need to close and re-lauch Revit for the settings to take effect.

When you get done with that you'll get to set up your material colors for actual rendering.
Last I checked Structural Steel shows the nice primer red color in Generic Rendered view, but shows up as Burnish Aluminum when actually render it.
Enjoy
