I read in the Revit Performance Technical Note that "Most customers have realized many benefits by providing teams with instant messaging software".

Is this true, and if so, what IM software are most people using? Is there a way to keep users from chatting with friends outside the office?

I'd like to see the stats and research they did on "Most customers..." In my experiance it is typically quite the opposite.

AIM used to have an enterprise messaging solution which can be setup with restrictions - guess it still exists.

You can use Office Communicator so at least everybody would have to have MS office to run it. It works fairly well with outlook, etc. We are a large office (multiple floors, multiple offices) and use it quite frequently. However, I dont see the benefits if everybody is sitting in the same room...

Well it might help if it's like my old office, with the entire floor open (except for central core). Although, in that office the cubicles were mostly arranged in groups and people in each group typically worked on the same projects.
