Roof Join only partial

Why is my roof joining this way?

I operated under the assumption that I make the roof footprint such that I have the edge I want to join pulled slightly away from the second roof and then use the join roof edge tool to get the two roofs to join together. But the result is as shown. I realize the roof not joining properly has a ridge higher than the one I am trying to join to, but why the strange faceted join?

It's only stretching the taller roof over to the shorter roof as high as the shorter roof is.

The flat areas you see at the top of the joined roof is the roof thickness on each slope of the tall roof.

Your only option there is to create another roof footprint sized to fill in the missing portion, with a slope on the sides to match the joined roof, and a slope on one end to match the slope of the shorter roof, move it into position and then join geometry.
