draw closed poly around text to be masked
wipeout -> select poly
copy mtext (maintain coords.), erase previous mtext
after all created, turn wipeout frame off.

Than I suggest you look into the "wipeout" option suggested by ozzy84
draw closed poly around text to be masked
wipeout -> select poly
copy mtext (maintain coords.), erase previous mtext
after all created, turn wipeout frame off.
With this you can just "wipeout" parts of mtext but it wouldn't be "connected" to the mtext.
I wouldn't necessarily copy and erase the mtext, I would use draworder and send the wipeouts to the front, and then send the mtext to the front (which would place the text on top of the wipeouts which would be on top of everything else) But that's me.
You can't use background mask on certain parts of mtext.

Or, instead of copying the text, just select the text and move it to front using the draw order tools.
