Hi there,
Apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place, took me ages to find a thread that looked kind of right...(its been a long day).
Anyway, I work for a small architecture company and recently I've been having problems copying drawing work from one drawing to another. More recently I've been having trouble copying certain items/layers to other parts of the same drawing. Having checked through many other posts etc containing many of the same problems and coming up with no answers, I decided to make a post myself.
My work machine is (as far as I'm aware) the only machine left in the office running AutoCAD 2000i LT, the rest all run AutoCAD 2004. However all drawings are saved in 2000 so I can open/edit them. I have tried everything I can to resolve this problem and I'm swiftly running out of idea's, the senior technologists in the office havn't a clue either! The only reason that I can think off, is that its something to do with 2004 saving to 2000. Its mainly only certain layers and blocks that don't seem to like being copyed ( I have tried every version of copying before you ask, copy with base point, paste as block and even blocking an item before trying to copy it ) I probably should have mentioned this before, the Copy Object command works fine, its just the Copy to Clipboard that doesnt. One other thing I forgot to mention, normally when I have this problem I ask someone else to open the drawing in 2004 and copy the object for me. Being a busy office this isn't always the best option as I'm sure you can understand.
Seems like I'm rambling a bit now...
Anyway, thanks for your help in advance
Kind regards, Charlie
What exactly are the problems you're having?
You can't select the objects?
You seem to be able to copy them but can't paste them?
Are you getting any error messages?
Are you or anyone else using ADT or any third party apps?
(or we just talking 2-d vanilla autocad?)

also, how much data are you trying to copy at one time? There is a limit to clipboard capacity.

There is a posting in the autodesk knowledge base that sounds like your problem, but with 2007 and 2000.

Watch word wrap.
You may want to check for an update for 2004, or a better solution is to get a newer version of LT.

Thanks for the quick responses!
tedg - I can copy the objects using the Copy Object command but not the Copy to Clipboard command. So yeh, its seems like either copy or paste isn't working. No I'm not getting any error messages and no 3rd party apps are running as far as I'm aware.
jaberwok - It depends, generally its not a huge amount. Sometimes a large portion of the drawing, sometimes only a single line. The result is the same.
Richard.Kent - Yeh I read about that update, seems to me that its just for AutoCAD 2007? It does seem to describe the exact problem I'm having though. I think the whole office is getting AutoCAD upgrades around Christmas time. So I'll just have to cross my fingers this problem doesn't happen too much until then.
One more thing I may or may not have mentioned, I only seem to have this issue when I'm editing a drawing someone has created in 2004. If I make the drawing myself (in 2000) there seems to be no problem.
Thanks for your help guys

AutoCAD has issues copyclipping objects with metadata. Try saving your drawing as an R12 DXF file and opening to see if the copyclip pasteclip work OK.

Thanks Scott, I tried doing that but kept getting some error message when I re-opened the drawing. However I found a way round the problem if anyone is interested. Its a long winded way of going about things though. Basically I did a Save As of the drawing I wanted to copy something from (calling it 'A.dwg' or whatever) then deleted everything else on the drawing and re-saved. Then opening up the drawing I wanted to copy to, I used Xref to attach drawing 'A'. I then binded drawing 'A' to my current drawing (getting rid of the xref) and exploded it. Hey presto!

maybe try your idea only insert it as a block rather than an xref? Just a thought ;-)

This happened to me at one time, and in the end it turned out to be that the layer was locked in the drawing. I should have thought of that, as the drawings here pass through multiple people.
