View Full Version : Shadow Artifacts

We have to produce elevational studies of the building facades for the winter solstice.

Because there are buildings behind the view that will cast shadows I have to use an orthographic camera view, or else they will not cast shadows. (section boxes and elevations do not cast shadows of objects not in the view)

However when I look at the elevations there are artifacts in the shadows: areas where the shadow is "pixelated". These are not shadows cast by objects. (see attached image)

If I look at the same model in say an axonometric view, these artifacts do not appear.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this issue? I have tried everything, for about 3 weeks now.....

I don't know if you've solved this problem yet, but I thought I'd chime in a response. I had a similar issue where I was doing a top down shadow study for a building and the shadow was pixelating at the extents of the shadow - it looked like the building shadow was off-gassing, very weird. But when I printed it to .PDF it turned out just fine. I don't know if you actually tried writing the .pdf or not, but if not, give it a try and see if it works.

Is the elevation a shaded view w/ shadows turned on? This could be a display driver/graphics card issue. Check Open GL settings, etc.

Also, try rendering the camera view oriented to the elevation.

Cheers.

It happens when I export to .jpg and PDF or print. Doesn't happen when I render.

Is printing to PDF dependent on the graphics card? I wouldn't have thought so.

Just a thought. Do you have planting categories turned off in the view? Maybe if so, these could be giving artefact problems. I'd suggest a support request anyway to help resolve this issue.
