I've created a custom wall type in a project and would like to know how to save this new wall type to it's own family type (external file) that I can use whenever I want. Could somebody tell me if this is possible and if so how is it done?

You cant save walls out as individual projects, but there are a few other ways to do it.

You can group the wall, then right click on the group definition in the project browser and hit Save group, and save is an an RVT. Then, in the new project you can go File > Load file as group to load the wall type in.

You can also go Transfer Project standards, and select the walls catagory, but that will bring in EVERY wall type from the project you select.

I use the first method, and group my wall types together. A group of "Interior Metal Stud Partitions," "Interior Wd Stud partitions," and "Masonry", etc...

You could open up a new project and use the 'Transfer Project Standards' to get your walls styles into that project, delete any wall types you don't want, save the project with the name of that wall(s) and use that project as the one you are transferring from into your other projects.

I have one drawing that has all my stair and railing types, another for all my wall types, another for my floor types and so forth. I've purged everything out of them to keep them small, so they open faster and it makes transferring quicker.

I think I got the idea from ADT, where it has drawings set up with railing styles and wall styles and so forth. Most of what I use is in my template, however, if I purge a drawing and have to go back into it later, it makes for 'reloading' styles that I need quicker than creating them from scratch. ;)
