OK OK design options the feature in Revit that you love to hate. does anyone know the difference of the colors that pop up while deleting design options. some are black some are Grey. (see attachment) I know the black ones are tied into the visibility set up for that view. but the Grey ones are confusing. No matter what option (even if they are set to automatic) you set them on they still want to delete them.

Try setting the design option to Primary, set this up in the Design Option pull down.

This may work.

Hey Jarod, it has been a while...

I think the answer is the view Property 'Visible in Option'.
Here is an example:
While editing an option draw a section. Now look at the properties of the section.
'Visible in Option' will get set to the option you were editing will be set.
This is what makes the section marker know to only display when this option is visible.
Now if you try to delete that option, that view will be grey because Revit assumes you want to delete it if you delete the option it is 'in'.
To keep it set the 'Visible in Option' property to 'all' or some other option you are not deleting.

Hope this helps,
Steve

If you in your view properties you set the parameter "Visible in option" to an specific option, when deleting that option this view will be shown as gray in the list, because since that view is set to show that specific option, Revit understands that the view should be also deleted. So the gray in the list don't allow you to uncheck it. But if in your view properties the parameter "Visible in option" is instead set to "All", the when deleting the design option it will list that view in black. Since it is not really set to show elements belonging to one specific option (usually it is set to Automatic - to show the primary), it will give you the choice of unchecking it at the moment you are deleting the option. That's explain why it is black. It is active.
