View Full Version : Fields and Blocks and Leaders

I'm just discovering the power of fields. One thing, however, would make it a true "field day" is if I could link a field to the insertion point of blocks and leaders.
I do a lot of coordinate labels for alignments, and being able to use fields to dynamically label these points would be invaluable.
As it stands now, I have to place objects like circles or arcs on the objects, and link the fields to them. A workaround, but being able to use leaders like true coordinate dimensions would be awesome.

 Scott,
You are aware of the Position field for objects, aren't you? Please see attached drawing.
P.S. I have moved this thread to the Fields forum.

Thanks, Robert; I had checked the object types for the field, but overlooked it. I was looking for insertion point or start point. That solves 1 of my 2 requests.

I'm glad I could help. Maybe it is because I'm not a civil guy... but I cannot think of a situation where I would want the leader's point to be the coordinate, and not the object I'm pointing to. (Isn't there always an object that you are pointing to?)

I wouldn't use fields for this task, I would use
the MAP annotation tool.

Hi
What good is the Map annotation tool to an AutoCAD User?
And please don't say an AutoCAD User should be using the right tool for the job; please remember this thread was originally within the ACAD 2005 Wish List (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=57) Forum therefore Scott's request is perfectly acceptable ie Added functionality to Fields.
Have a good one, Mike

Mr, Perry
The user works for a Civil Engineering firm, he is attempting
to label alignments (a civil task). The user also frequently
posts within the Civil/GIS forums, ergo he has access to
MAP functionality.

Hi
I work for a Civil Engineering company so does that mean in your book I must use Map, LDT, Civil 3D etc ?
I think we should let Scott say if he uses Map, plus I don't consider 1 post out of 62 (as of Sunday 3rd October 2004) -
I can't open two drawing at once! (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=8722)
constitutes "user also frequently posts within the Civil/GIS forums".
Have a good one, Mike
ps Mr Perry is so formal plus it makes me think I done something wrong (have I?).... Mike, Mick or Michael (as christened) is fine.

Just some clarification on a few issues:
1. I work for a Environmental/Geotechnical firm. (That does not make me a geologist, either, but I do more of that than infrastructure.)
2. I do NOT use MAP (I use Eagle Point)
3. I don't frequently post within Civil/GIS, but thanks for caring, MJF.
4. I'm not labeling alignments; I typically label the coordinates in earth dam design, so the leader points to a vertex in a polyline or 3Dpolyline. (the dam crest/bench).
Oh, and using the position of a point would be nice, too. I'm not sure why that one was omitted.
Hope this clarifies things. Sheesh, My kid gets sick for a few days, and I missed all of the action!
