Just wondering if anyone has done any work on a dome building in Revit. I am going to be starting a project here soon & will need to be able to make a concrete dome structure in Revit. If anyone could possibly point me in the direction of tutorials or help in how to do that I would greatly appreciate it!

You can do that by creating a Mass and revolving half of the dome profile around an axe. Once the mass is generated, you can create concrete walls by picking the mass face.

If you go into your standard metric library you should see a folder called sample files. This has a whole heap of roof examples, as well as stairs and railings. In the sheets it gives basic guidelines to how they were created.

Remember this is a project file not a family file so make sure your searching for rvt files when you open it.

I use the imperial not metric & I don't see a folder called sample files anywhere?

Sample files can be found at the Revit Content web page. Link to this page is found on the Revit startup screen on the right side in the black menu bar area.

It's a monolithic dome...

Anyone know how to make an eliptical dome? with a circle in the center?

An eliptical dome should be the same revolve procedure.

a simple revolve will not resolve the different geometry of a circle at the center of a dome with the eliptical exterior.... When i do the revolve i a round dome. Im atempting a sweep blend, in which i selected the elipse as the bath... im having trouble getting revit to accept the geometries.

I've added some images to help explain the isssue.

Can you try adding the images again, I do not see any attachments.

I am curious how did you create your elliptical dome with a revolve? Elliptical dome meaning that in plan view the footprint is an ellipse.

Using an inplace family with the revolve option, select a reference plane in plan as your revolve axis and create one of the symteric sides of your ellipse or "egg" shape. Specify the angle with which to revolve. Finish sketch, Finish Family...

A true ellipse could not be made that way. A 4 piece arc approximation of an ellipse can be. I chose to construct all ellipses as 4 tangent arcs so I can dimesion them easier.

A true ellipse is symetric, and therefor can be created from a revolve. See attached .rvt

I see where I was confused, you revolved the shape around the horizontal axis. I was trying to revolve something about a vertical axis. Thanks

I was attempting to make it in a sweep/blend as well...A simple revolve in the other plane is the right way to go... Thanks! Sometimes the simple answers are the most difficult!

What about the structure for the dome? Has anyone been able to model the beams, joist, or connection points?
I am starting to work on a geodesic style dome that has a very flat structure. Vary similar to the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma Washington. I have been having problems with some of the beams creating errors when I select a line the makes up the basic structural layout.

I wish I had some advice for you but I work at the firm that worked on the Tacoma dome. I can see it out my window. How would you model that in Revit?
