What is the best practice for architects to host doors and windows into a linked structural Revit model? Is the exercise different between 2008 and 2009? Can an architect host doors and windows on a linked structural model? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

No you cannot host them in a linked model, without opening that model to insert them. Try Copy/Monitoring the Structural wall into your own model, and then insert the Door. Doing so may create a coordination event in the Copy/Monitor report, but that means you'll have to coordinate this opening with structural anyway.

This is a work-around, but will do the job. Draw a small wall in the opening, make sure the wall is smaller then the door you wish to insert (height and width) then place the door in that new wall.

If you are working with others make sure your team know what you did. The door can not move without moving the wall, but the wall is not visible, so it can be confusing if you need to move that door later.
