I have a profile from an existing ground surface. I simply want to offset this profile down a certain distance to help as a guide in a water line layout. I know this can be done with proposed profiles. I seem to recell doing it before with an existing profile but I can't seem to remember. Any thoughts?

Civil 3D 2008 or civil 3d 2009 either solution would work.

Thanks.

Create a profile by sampling it from the surface, then in the Profile properties, change its update mode from Dynamic to Static. Then you can raise or lower it.

Of course, if this is the sort of thing you do a lot, then you may find this very useful. Draw a polyline on your surface and run this command, and it will use the polyline to create the alignment, sample the surface, create an FG profile that is automatically offset from the surface by the desired amount, and prune extraneous PVIs, all at the same time:
