Anyone having positve-negative results in turning on shadows? Sometimes in 09 when we trun on shadows we get the opposite of what we expect. Light items should be and dark items should be light.

Yes--I think there is a known bug with display performance in RAC 2009.
Be sure you install the 1st Service Pack (WU1?) and are running the latest build.
Also try different settings with Open GL, etc. under Settings>Options>Graphics

is there anyone that can help me with creating shadows for a floor plan, but to create the shadows with the roof above casting the shadows of the eave as well as the walls etc.

You can't do this type of rendering in Revit. You need to do this in a rendering application that allows you to flip the nromals of a face and Revit does not offer that kind of control.
