Can we anticipate any problems mixing and matching 64 bit with 32 bit OS / software in a workset enabled project?
Would love to install RAC 2009 64 bit on my XP Pro 64 bit workstation--but mine is the only 64 bit machine in our group--just want to be sure it will play well with the others?

I don't see it on the Subscription site. Where is the download for RAC64?
But I must say that came out fast. And YES I agree it rocks on Vista 64.

They've released the Revit MEP file. They're getting Revit Structure and Revit Architecture uploaded now. Be patient. You've waited this long, you can wait another 64 seconds or 64 minutes....and only 198 days until Revit 2010 comes out.

I just opened a Revit Architecture file in Revit Arch 64 bit, saved it and then opened it in Revit Arch 32 bit.
...drum roll.....and the winner is.....Yes it worked. I even made a change to a wall in 64bit, saved it, opened it in 32bit, saved it again and opened it 64 bit. It's the same, but, wow, did it open so much faster in 64bit.
In the election of oBIMa vs McCAD, oBIMa just went up majorly in the polls.

Hey Gregory,
The page can not be found. Plus I can not find it on on the Subscription site either. I don't think it has to do with the fact that I am in Canada.
Any thoughts? Thanks,

We always make an "official" statement when products are available. It would be appreciated if our resellers would allow the Autodesk announcement to go public first. We know you all are excited to get the new stuff...just be patient!

I understand, but the resellers usually find out after the public does. I'm just trying to keep my blog readers and subscribers happy. If the releases are posted on subscription center, isn't that as official as it gets?
Everyone reading this, forget you ever saw the words Revit and 64 bit.
This is only a dream and you never saw this thread.
Scott, I hope that worked. Thanks for your efforts. You guys are doing a great job with Revit and us BIM resellers appreciate it.

First Autodesk BIM Software for Windows 64-Bit Operating Systems Now Available
Autodesk News <news@autodesk.mediaroom.com> Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 6:32 AM To: autodesk@mail.mediaroom.com
News Release Issued: September 30, 2008 6:30 AM EDT
First Autodesk BIM Software for Windows 64-Bit Operating Systems Now
Available
Third-Party Beta Testers Report Significant Productivity and Performance
Gains with New 64-Bit Revit Platform Software
SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Autodesk, Inc.,
(NASDAQ: ADSK) today announced that versions of its Revit software
applications for Building Information Modeling (BIM) specifically designed
for personal computers using Windows 64-bit operating systems are now
available. This marks the company's first venture into 64-bit BIM
applications and applies to Revit Architecture 2009, Revit Structure 2009 and
Revit MEP 2009. The 64-bit versions are now available to existing Revit
platform software subscribers. Customer beta testers reported that the new
software applications offer significantly improved performance and stability
for memory intensive tasks such as rendering, printing, model upgrading and
file importing and exporting. Some examples of their experience include:
"In every single test I threw at the Revit Structure for the 64-bit system it
beat the 32-bit system," said Ken Murphy, BIM manager, Thornton Tomasetti. "On
average, we observed approximately a 20 percent performance gain on operations
such as saving files and exporting models to other formats for outside
consultants. And when it comes to rendering images of large project models,
such as an American football stadium with thousands of members, we saw up to
a 50 percent performance improvement over the 32-bit platform."
"With 64-bit Revit Architecture we can completely load a very large project
into a session and work on it at one time; and that is something that
represents a significant efficiency improvement over the 32-bit environment,"
said Lonnie Cumpton, Revit task force manager for the Friedmutter Group. "For
example, we have a large project that consists of 2.9 gigabytes of Revit data
contained in 22 individual files. With 64-bit Revit Architecture we can link
all the pieces together into one big model and cut an entire building section
to gain an understanding from a section elevation standpoint of the entire
project at one time. Using 32-bit Revit Architecture we'd have to cut
individual pieces of sections in each model and then piece them back
together. It took us a day to do that. Now we can do it in less than an
hour."
"We've been beta testing the 64-bit Revit Structure software and the
increases in efficiency and productivity are impressive," said Jamie
Richardson, Associate & CAD manager, Ericksen Roed & Associates. "Cutting
sections and switching between views is much faster. Moving within the views
and rotating the model in a 3D view is also noticeably faster and smoother.
With what we have seen in our beta testing, and what we're hearing from users
testing the beta on their current projects, we see no reason not to go to the
64-bit version of Revit Structure."
Availability
The English language versions of new 64-bit Revit software applications are
available now to existing Revit Architecture 2009, Revit Structure 2009 and
Revit MEP 2009 subscribers via the online Subscription Center. The 64-bit
software will release in other languages at a later date.
"We're very excited to hear our beta testers report stunning performance
gains with the native 64-bit versions of the Revit software applications,"
said Jay Bhatt, senior vice president, Autodesk AEC Solutions. "Breaking the
four gigabytes RAM barrier is an important milestone, which helps our
customers experience the power of BIM in even their largest projects."

64 bit installed--running fine, playing well w/ 32 bit machines in network/workset
environment.
Also was able to open our "problem child" project--+ 280 MB , which our 32 bit machines have been struggling with.
Opened, Audited, Purged, STC w/64 bit. Now opens more easily in 32 bit.
yay!

Still limited to 4 cores in rendering. If you need more than that
export FBX to 3dsMax Design--and use distributed bucket rendering or Backburner.

So is there any point in installing this on a 32-bit machine, or would it even work at all?
Also, I'm guessing it takes 64-bit processors to run 64-bit OS. Would it be possible to upgrade my current Dell Precision 490 machine with dual dual-core 2.66 GHz Xeon x86 processors to Xeon x64 processors? I'm pretty sure the motherboard has 8 memory slots, and only 4 are being used right now. Even if I could do that, I don't know how big a power supply I would need. I think my machine has a 650W power supply, and I've heard of some 64-bit quad and 8-core machines needing 1kW power supplies

i think your confusing yourself here.... basically all this means is that the software is now compatable with windows 64bit software... which in turn will take advantage of additional memory and will process data in 64bits as opposed to 32bits of information at a time for each cycle of the cpu...so just go update your operating system to a version of 64bit software and make sure your hardware meets the minimum requiremetns for your needs... that can be found on the augi forums too.

64bit Processor are already available since Pentium 4. So I believe you have the latest, just upgrade your OS to 64 bit. I assume your 4 slots means 4 Gig of RAMS which is sufficient enough. For now.

It is great that we now have the option of going 64 bit and undoubtedly a lot of us will do so.
But do we go 64 bit XP Pro or 64 Bit Vista?
My own inclination at the moment is to go xp pro - used to it - not overly big install (2 or 3 gb vs 11 to 14 gb) - plus all of the bench test I have seen indicate that Vista is slightly slower than xp (at least in the 32bit app)
I guess the down side is that XP is totally on the way out as far as MS is concerned. I think the updates etc stop in a year or so.
So what is it to be, XP or Vista?
I would love to hear what others have found who have installed the 64 bit program on whichever version of the OS you are using before I go out & buy the new OS.
Thanks in advance
Cheers,
Ian
Until installing Revit 64 I ran 32 bit Revit on Vista 64.
It was more stable than on XP Pro with no OpenGL problems (this was with an Ati FireGL V5600 card), however there was a general slowdown of the already unspectacular Revit graphic performance.
Revit 64 on Vista 64 restores graphic performance to at least the same as on Revit on XP.
While there are a lot of Vista 64 drivers around now there are still a few compatibility issues.
At least one 3rd party add-on for Revit will not install under Vista 64 at the moment (toolbox4Revit).
I also notice in Revit 64 that accessing the Spelling tab under Options brings up an error message saying 'access to c:\Program files\Revit Architecture 2009\Custom.DIC was denied.' and the only way out is to cancel the Options dialogue.
I assume this is a permissions thing but don't yet know how to fix it.
[Edit: /solution is to use 'run as administrator' by right-clicking on Revit icon - see this thread http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?p=893907#post893907 ]
Overall however I really like Vista 64 and would not go back to XP.

I believe you are looking thru the 32 bit version of Windows. So it will only give information related to 32 bit system.
From Intel website
"The breakthrough performance, energy efficiency, and reliability of Intel® Xeon® processor-based server systems make them the ideal choice for all of your data demanding or standard enterprise infrastructure applications.
Intel® processor-based servers enable businesses worldwide to do more and spend less—with outstanding price/performance and broad 64-bit choice across OEMs, operating systems, and applications. Supported by a single stable mainstream 2P server platform supporting a range of CPU options for IT flexibility, investment protection and easy migration."

I envy you, you got Xeon. I only got the lemon "Intel® Core™2 Processor with vPro".
Get the 64bit version of Windows and enjoy the speed. "You got Xeon, man. Use it!!"
Let me know if you need more info. I'm all ears.

I'm using 64 bit XP Pro and 64 Bit Vista Ultimate(two computers. I'm not really familiar with Vista Ultimate, so I'm having trouble running program or accessing a feature in the program due to Vista strict security feature. I believe William, your error message is due to this.
Using Vue 6 in Vista, I have to open and run it as administrator mode. If you move your "Favorite" folder properly from its original location. You will also get error message in accessing. So, my Vista machine ends up as rendering machine. For working or preparations, I use the 64 bit XP Pro Machine. If you are familiar with Vista's security feature. Then I would stick to Vista. Why? On my Vista machine my 8 Gig ram is fully visible in the system prop. In my XP Pro machine, the physical 8 Gig ram shows less in the system prop.

Processor: x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6 GenuineIntel ~2659 Mhz
Processor: x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6 GenuineIntel ~2660 Mhz
You can try this. But beware, this step is ment for those who are familiar in installing OS.
If you know anybody with a 64 bit Windows XP or Vista. Try to borrow the disk. Theres no need for a CD-Key for this test.
With the disk in hand, reboot the system and boot from the CD/DVD drive. During the boot up. The disk will check if you meet the requirement. Hope this help.

Here is what CPU-Z shows for my processors (both 1 and 2 show the same info). I see EM64T in there, so does that mean it can run a 64-bit OS?
Yes. Thats the one. You are 64 bit qualified. Enjoy the ride once you make the shift.

heh I'm not sure if I want to yet, with all the drivers needed for numerous printers and things around the office. Also our printer drivers are stored on our server machine running Windows Server 2003 32-bit. So I'm guessing I would need to install 64-bit versions of all our print drivers on my own machine in order to run a 64-bit OS, correct?

that has been my experience.
I spent quite a while checking that all my plotters and printers did have 64 bit Vista drivers available before making the switch.
I did install a virtual machine on my Vista 64 PC with XP Pro installed within that to run problem programmes, but USB doesn't work I think in the MS free VM.

Has anyone fully tested moving between 32 & 64-bit versions of Revit? We are replacing a handful of machines in our office and going with 64-bit vista, so some projects could potentially be worked on in both 32 & 64-bit versions at the same time. I have a gut feeling I'm going to regret trying to combine the versions.....

You can work on the same project in a mixed 32 and 64 bit environment. Just don't ask people who are using the 64 bit machines to move back to a 32 bit machine they will be unhappy. :)

Several people here have confirmed that Revit models can be interchanged between 32-bit and 64-bit systems. However, it is very possible that very complex/large models that work on 64-bit systems won't work, or won't work very well on 32-bit systems.

Separate installation
XP 64 has two program files folders:
(32 bit) = C:\Program Files (x86)\Revit Architecture 2009
(64 bit) = C:\Program Files\Revit Architecture 2009
does this mean we can install 32 and 64 bit RAC on a 64 bit os?
I have had Revit 32 running very happily on Vista 64 for months and now Revit 64 also.
The attached screenshot shows them both running at the same time ;)

Yes, they both work on a 64bit Windows. I have them both installed in Vista 64. What can't be done is install 64 in a 32bit OS.

Bump....It fell pretty far off the first page.
Scott, pardon my ignorance of posting jargon:Oops:, and it probably isn't of any great importance, but I was just wondering what your post meant, thanks.

Bump is a "technique" to restore a post to the top of the post list. He's referring to the fact that this thread was no longer near the top and easy to see and find.
Ah, thanks Steve.
Must have missed that one in my online education :)

So, apart from the memory restriction going away, are there considerable performance benefits going to 64bit? It would be quite a project to reinstall everything on our main revit workstations, but our current project is going to grow pretty big and extra performance will be welcome...

The only numbers I have benchmarked, are the opening of two large files, and the conversion of one large file from 2008 to 2009.. On opening the large files, on a 166 meg file, as well as a 210 meg file, the 64 bit version, w/ 8 meg of ram is approximately 35%+ faster. The conversion took 1 hr 20 minutes on a machine w/ 4 gig running the 32 bit version, and 22 minutes in this newer machine. Personally, I'll take those gains alone.

The documentation has taken care to warn off expectation of performance improvements but as Scott attest there will certainly be operations that will benefit from unfettered access to more ram. I'm quite glad I just bought a new laptop with XP64 and 8GB of ram a couple months ago.

3 weeks ago we purchased 24 new Vista 64 machines with 8Gb of ram in each box. We are seeing faster open times compared to our 32-bit boxes. I like it! Add in the fact that I've pushed our render farm for 3DS Max out to a few of these boxes and I've made a large group of people in our office very happy.

We just upgraded a 250mb file from 08 and are seeing massive increases in speed in all areas, many tasks take half as long as they used to. So glad this is finally here, have about half the users upgraded to 64 now there is no reason to not do the rest.

Just having started to install 64-bit RAC 2009, is it usual for the default program installation directory to be the 32-bit destination?
I'm installing it on Vista Business 64-bit, and the default install directory came up as:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk... etc.
I edited this by removing the (x86) portion which I know is where the 32-bit apps should be installed, but thought perhaps the default SHOULD be the right choice. Any thoughts?

Hi Chris,
During my first stab at installing the 64bit version I tried to located the files in a different directory (in fact in a different logical drive). Revit did not like this one little bit and with a big spit of the dummy crashed the whole install program.
Suitably chastened, I let it install itself in it's default locations (x86) Programs and it has worked smoothly ever since.
Revit, for me, is far more stable, no open gl problems and much much faster in every regard.
Well worth the extra ram and new OS imho.
Cheers,
Ian

I am using Vista Business 64 as well, and it installed by default in the Program Files folder ,not the Program Files (x86) folder. I have never had a 64 bit program chose the (x86) folder, strange that it should happen. It would probably overwrite the (x86) folder, since they both have the same name too. When you turn on Revit, in the splash screen on the lower left corner it says "2009 x64" ?

Thats where a 64bit program will be installed. All 32 bit application installed on a 64 bit OS go into the (x86) folder.
