hi
when you wanna create a new family, symbolics lines are useful to show a geometry that wont be visible in a particular view.
are they generated automatically upon setting the visibility option of such or such geometry that you dont want to display in a particular view?
otherwise,do you have to pick the geometry in order to apply the symbolic lines on it?
thank you

You will only see symbolic lines in the view you draw them (plan, front/back, sides) but you can set the lines to determine the detail level they show at (course, medium, fine)
If you don't draw the lines in, they won't be there.
You can lock the lines to the geometry, or to reference planes.
If the object is parametric, then it should be locked to reference planes, so your lines should have those planes to lock to.

Have you tried using the align or dimension commands?
Here's how: select the align command, select the reference plane, then select the geometry or line. When you do this, a small padlock icon should appear. If you click on that icon, it will toggle between lock and unlock.
Another way to do this is to set a dimension from your line to the reference plane, and lock the dimension.
Hope this helps.

What jkady said with the planes.
One thing you might want to note is that the detail lines are only visible in the plane they are created in, so if your object gets rotated (like on a roof slope) then it won't show in plan.
