I typically show roof and parapet overhangs as dashed line on the first floor plan and am open to any tips you folks might have to achieve this.

Thanks!

1. Duplicate the roof view.
2. Turn off all objects except the roof.
3. Tweek the view range as needed to show what you want.
4. Set the view to hidden line.
5. Override the object style for this view so the roof is a dashed line.
6. Place this view on top of the floor plan on the sheet. They will snap in alignment.
7. Set the roof plan viewport to a family style with no title or callout bubble.

The advantage of this over linework is that it will always be up-to-date.

Thanks Aaron! That was what I was looking for. Of course, the roof outlines should update with the model when changes are made. I can assume correctly that the same method works for parapet walls overhang? Although, the parapet exterior face should display without the "interior" face.

A different approach to achieve this...

Temporarily change the cut plane height of your view so you are above your roofs. Invoke the detail line tool from the drafting menu - set the linetype to be overhead (or your choice). Use the pick option and toggle the lock preset to "on". Pick the edges of your roof. Reset your cut plane height.

Advantages over Aaron's method... you see these lines while working in your plan view, not just on the sheet.

Disadvantages from Aaron's method... it is easier to "break" the lock between the detail line and your roof. If you edit sketch on your roof, then delete a line, then recreate that line, you've now broken the relationship between the detail line and the roof.

Cheers!

Either method is workable, within the limitations imposed. Wish list item: the ablity to bring objects outside the vertical view plane up or down the work view and overide the object line type in that view. I see the object views for roofs are defined soffit and fascias already. So the development team already has the roof objects defined in sub categories to then change the view plane of that object on the plan view. think this a a big technical hurdle to clear?

Another option:

Set the underlay to roof plan, then use the linework tool (not drafting lines) and then change the lines you want to overhead. Then turn off the overlay and the overhead lines remain.

The advantage... since they are really just a change in the view they can not be disconnected and you can choose exactly what pieces of the roof you'd like to show in your floor plan.

Disadvantage: You can only change entire lines.

Lots of choices.

Cathy has the right idea. The only comment that I have is the disadvantage listed is incorrect. When the Linework tool is used on a projected edge, you are provided with handles that you can drag to limit the amount of the edge effected by the tool.
