Okay along with alot of other people Iam frustrated at the lack of editing that the rendering engine in revit 2009 building will let you do.
I have a custom stainless steel material for a wall Iam trying to do..
Iam able to go to edit materials and create a duplicate say for brick or concrete and direct it to pick up my custom image I have done say for brick or stone and use that for a rendering map..
But as soon as I try to edit the metals Iam not able to direct the image map to go to my custom image ..I can only use the predefined metal image maps ..Well, they dont work for me.
And what is this Promaterials?
Where can I find it?

If I understand you problem correctly, you want to apply an image to be the new material. to do this you need to go the "render apearance based on" click on the "Replace" button and change it to "generic" which can be found in the selection list. This will open up a bunch of new options to edit the material. Under the preview will be a section called "Generic Material Properties", where it says color there is a pull down. in that pull down you have two options, single color or image. select image and hit the "..." box and select your image file. it may take a little tweaking to get the scale right, but it should work out. The thing is this image will only show when rendering, so if that isn't what you want it for you are stuck with surface pattern hatches.

I have provided a wall with my desktop background pasted onto it as an example.

Hope this helps...

ProMaterials is just the name of the rendering materials library included with Revit 2009. Materials in Revit 2009 are managed from the project. The user does not modify/add to the library from outside of a Revit project.
