Hi there Guys
Anyone has a solution for importing 3ds files into Revit.
I don't have the luxury of 3DSMax yet.
Thanks.

AutoCAD can import 3DS files. Save them as DWG and import into Revit.
...also, welcome to the forums! :)

Thanks for the welcome Zoltan
to import to autocad and then to revit is a long and tedious process, and the materials tend to get lost in the process.
But thanks any way

Not sure how good SAT files are with materials but Revit can import those. Along with dxf and skp.

would be interesting to know what you are importing
you cannot import max files into Revit
Dwg is your best bet
.sat files are very good but can only be made from Solids and Nurbs
i don't think you can get materials into Revit
the best results i had was with Rhino .sat Files

Mr. mruehr
I'm trying to import *.3ds files. I've been collecting these for the past 4 years. All sort of furniture lights and many more. Some on them are created by Archicad ppl. and can be directly imported to archicad as part of their liberary. (*.gsm files)
I've been using Autocad Architecture since ADT 3.3 and only receintly converted to Revit. And would like to use some of these models in my creations. In autocad it is easy. But being new to Revit it is not that easy at the moment.
Thanks for the responce

i guess first Revit is generally more happy with its own Geometry.
it uses Solids and is in some ways closer to Mechanical Modelers than Cad
for one thing you cannot hide Edges so curved geometry from polygon models look
bad in shaded views with edges on. they are fine for rendering but that's about all.
.sat files originate from solids or Nurbs and work very well in Revit
whenever you use Dwg dxf or sketchup files they will do better when importing them into a Generic Family. They will cut and generally behave better.
but as i mentioned before, building your Family Objects in Revit having them parametric
will be painful in the beginning but sweet in the end.

There is a separate company that makes a translator for 3DSMAX files into Revit. just found it, Don't know costs, or how good it is. Here is the web link

Good luck!

I´ve looked into the NPower "Revit to Max" software a while ago (wanted to use my max models to create Revit families) - But after this reply from David at NPower, I gave up on it...
The process for going back and forth between Max requires that the objects be in "our format". This can be done by using the "Pwr_EdtNRB" command (which converts objects into our format), or by creating the objects using our Power Solids commands, or by importing them directly from Revit, which automatically converts them to our format.
Do you model your objects in Max? The model that you sent is modeled in Max I think. The preferred mechanism is to create them using our tools in 3ds Max or create them in Revit.
When I bring up your model, I don't have your textures. Also, all of the objects are split up into a bunch of smaller objects (for example, the couch legs are in two pieces, and the couch is another piece). They probably should be a single entity.
I have to convert your objects to our format first, and that probably won't work perfectly with the disconnected editable meshes. Plus it takes a lot of time to convert them one by one.

Thanks for the reply.
I downloaded their demo program but had endless issues to install so i let it be.
I'm still looking around but when i find something I’ll post it here
I've been to Copenhagen once (only airport - enormous to our standards) and to Barit beautiful place.
Thanks again.
