Does anyone know if it is possble to place a tag, such as door tag in the door family. I am trying to do that, but it will only allow generic tags in a 3D Model Family it says. I want to have the tag in the family, so that it can placed along the door panel, instead of only horizontal or vertical, or in the door threshold. any help would be appreciated.

You cant put it in the door family, but there are ways to do what you want.

I use Tag All Not Tagged, and set it to create a leader > 1/8". Then, i grab a door tag and hit "select all instances" and uncheck the leader box in the option bar. They stay offset (not in the threshold) and have no leaders.

Takes about 6 seconds. :)

Great tip Aaron - It has always been bothering me, that the tags would place themself at the treshold (or elsewhere where I did´nt want them)

Thanks

even doing that, it still only places the tag horizontal or vertical, i cant freely rotate the tag anyway i want to, which is what I would like to do. the project i am working on, the doors are at 45 degree angles, not 90's, and the tag will not rotate to the angle.that is why i want to have the tag in the family, so i can line it up with the door panel, at any angle that may be, so i dont have to try to explain that i cant place a tag at an angle, like we can do with autocad now

I Revit 2009, after placement there is a third option, of "Rotated" for the tag orientation, but it will only work if the wall the door is placed in is not at a 90 deg. angle. IT does not follow the symbolic lines of a door set to a 45 deg swing.

What I would do in this scenario, is I would edit the door tag family, and make a new door tag. When in the door tag family, do a save as and name it Door Tag - 45 deg. or something like that. Then simply rotate the tag, save it and load it into your project. Now you have an additional Door Tag that is oriented at the angle you need, then just select the tags on the 45 deg walls, and switch them to this new door tag.

Revit is coded so that you cannot place a Tag in another family, and have it work like a tag. Also, it would not pick-up the auto-incrementing feature of the door. The system coded features for a Door, such as the Mark parameter, do not even appear when you have the door family open, so they are not accessible to you inside of the family.

And now you also have to go door by door and make sure youve used the tag that suits the look that youre trying to achieve.

While its a solution that works, i would stop and evaluate the time of maintaining this system, versus the Return on Investment (how much will it really get you?). The tags all being horizontal is a zero time investment, and depending on how many doors you have, this could be a many hour affair as the project goes on.

I dont want to have separate tags for an angle, and the time it would take on a project to maintain two types of tags, would not be conductive. so i guess, in Revit, there is no way to rotate the tag to be placed on a 45 degree angle. I will place this on the wish list then.

In the tag family if you go to the family category and paramters under the settings pull down menu, you can see in the dialog box that there is "Rotate with component" parameter that you can check the box. this might get you to where you want, but i would check after you do this to see if it adversly affects your other doors that are not on an angle. I think this way you can only have it has horizontal and not vertical. we tried it on on of our model and didn't like how it affected the other tags so we just lived with it not being at an angle.
