most people just create a material with a surface pattern of vertical lines at the spacing you want, then use detail components in a plan detail. no need to model. there is also a Mental Ray material for standing seam metal. If you absolutly must model the ribs there are many ways to do it. Line based familes, wall sweeps, curtain walls with the mullion profile the shape of the rib.

Scott is dead on as usual...... The easiest thing that I have done is to take the horizontal "siding" pattern and copy it to a new wall style as stdg seam and rotate to be vertical. I do like the the mullion idea......although that would be file size intensive.
