One way to make a local file is to drag the central file to local desktop, as you open it, accept the warning page to the creation of a local file
The other way is to open the actually central file, and do a save as to the desktop for the creation of a local file
I’ve noticed there is one difference between these two methods, the “open-save as” will create a accompanying backup folder, while the first method does not
Is one better than the other / we are doing something wrong / there is a better way

entirely up to you, but i sleep better at night knowing i have backups (read as more than one backup)

without that folder you won't be able to go back to earlier versions of your workshared project.

try it out. do a save as local file creation and do some work regularly saving to central. close the project and then through the File Menu and select Backups. You'll now be asked to browse to a folder, find your local file backup folder and then you see a new dialog listing all the saves timestamped and it will allow you to rollback or save as.

this works for central files too, but like i said before, sleep better with more backups

Since the rule is to never use the central file, do a copy-paste locally then open that file. You will also get a backup with it.

MAY BE I WASNT CLEAR OR due to MY BAD COMPOSITION

unless i open the central file, and do a save as...

if i drag the file and just rename, accept the message to turn it into a local file

it will not create a local backup folder along the same name of the local file....

***************i really like the local backup, this is the reason why i posted the question

Any chance that when you drag the central file from the folder to your desktop that you are not making a copy, rather you are moving the file? You have to make sure the drag creates a copy. When you save the project it should be creating a _backup folder regardless of where it is. Unless your user permissions don't allow you to create folders on your desktop?

In my casual tests just now Revit created a _backup folder in each instance.

First DONT put it on your desktop. copy the file to your local Drive somewhere, I like my documents. After you open it and save it the first time you will get the backup folder.
