Has anyone tried using a drafting tablet with Revit Arch 2009?? Not a Tablet Notebook but a PC with a tablet & pen attached in place of a mouse, does that work?

A pen and tablet or are you talking about a digitizer board and puck? Been wondering if my digitizer would work still with AutoCAD. Since there are no settings in Revit for a tablet I would think not unless the tablet your thinking of has its own setup to make the system think its a mouse...

As for AutoCAD....hey...tablet settings are still there!

This thread has a lengthy discussion about the merits of the Wacom tablets
http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=2745&highlight=wacom
There are also a few threads about the Cintiq tablet devices if you have a few more dollars.

I work for Wacom and I am doing some research on our use with Revit. Can you contact me directly at mike.dana@wacom.com to open discussion about your experiences with Wacom? This is for any of you on the thread and please share iwth colleagues as well. We are working on some configurations to show at AU this year.

Thanks -
Mike

I have forwarded this thread and your e-mail to my boss, who has been using the Cintiq 21" display for probably 4 years now and used the old 15" (I think) version before that for several years.

I have used a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet for the past couple of years and apart from a minor driver issue with Windows 7 totally love it.

So nice, so intuitive and so much less neck and shoulder pain for me vis a vis a mouse.

Cheers,

Ian

Hi Ian,

Do you find that with the Intuos 4 tablet under Windows 7 64 even with the Tip Double Click Distance driver option disabled that the Intuos 4 pen still doesn't register a click with Revit after boot up on the Properties drop down list - the big one at the top of the Properties box which displays say wall types with illustrations, but once Revit has been running a while or perhaps once the Type Properties Editor has been used this then works with the Intuos 4 pen?

I'm also finding that the pen cursor hangs for a few seconds every now and again and that when Revit is closed the pen cursor locks up for several seconds but tapping the erase end brings it back.

Great device though :)

Hi William,

The properties drop down list is hit and miss for me. Somedays it works like a charm, other days it is as stubborn as a mule. It was a source of substantial annoyance a few months back. Initially, I just got used to hitting "edit type" button which worked flawlessly, but having switched over to Philip Millers Family browser , ( http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=121673 ) the properties drop down list not been a big deal for me one way or the other.

As with you, the pen does sometimes hang for a few seconds every now and then. As you note, tapping the erase end brings it quickly back to life.

The major problem of the driver that I was having was that it would simply stop working if the computer was rebooted or switched off.

Having reviewed the Wacom forums, particularly ( http://forum.wacom.eu/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2249 ) I came to the conculsion that the Intuos 4 still has a few issues with Windows 7 64 bit. Following some instructions on the page, I deleted all Wacom software & folders and swept the registry clean of any references to Intuos 4 or Wacom and then did a completly clean install of the latest drivers. Having done so, it resloved my major issue completely.

It would be nice if the properties drop down button worked flawlessly, hopefully with the next driver update it is good to go.

thanks Ian - I might try the suggestion in the Wacom forum link you gave of delaying the start of the tablet driver by setting it to 'manual'.

Just noticed that there is a new Wacom driver posted:
6.1.6-5 (RC)
http://www.wacom.com/downloads/driver-detail.php?id=221 (for Win 7)

Edit /: Hmmm, this one doesn't allow the drop down in Properties to work at all.
Oh well, I guess they have fixed some other things.

Mmmm - its funny how things work differently. For me, the latest drivers, which I installed a week or two back, stabilises the drop down properties, which have worked flawlessly since I have loaded them!?!

Out of interest, did you do a complete clean install? Or overwrite the old one with the new? From what I have read, doing the latter is a bit problematic.

The full instructions for a clean install are:

a.) Reset the preference files in the wacom/pen tablet folder.
Go to Start=>Programs=>Wacom/Pen Tablet=>Preference File Utility
Now delete ALL.

b.) Please uninstall all drivers again. Go to Control Panel=>Add or Remove Programs
Now remove the Pen Tablet / Wacom Tablet. After a restart go to the search engine and look for the
files
tablet*.*
wacom*.*
pentab*.*
wintab*.*
Pen_Tablet.exe
Pen_Tablet.dll
Pen_TabletUser.exe
PenTablet.cpl
PenTablet.znc
Touch_Tablet.dll
Wintab32.dll
WTouchAPI.dll
WTouchCPL.exe
WTouchService.exe
WTouchUser.exe

and delete them.
As well delete the folders TABLET and WTABLET.
Please make sure, that you have hidden files included to the search.
Look in the System32 folder if the wintab*.* is deleted

In Vista64 there is a Wintab*.* in SYSTEM32 and in SYSWOW64.

Install new driver!

thanks Ian,

I have tried all that - even went through the Registry deleting everything with wacom mentioned (dozens of references).

Downloaded the International driver version as well...

No difference - I can select from the Type Properties editor drop down list easily but I can't make the drop down list above the element properties dialog drop down.

Wierd  ;)

I was having the exact same problem and after reading this post, quickly popped into Revit to check the specific behavior. Confusingly, I have no problems anymore! Only three things I have changed. Graphics card update, Windows update and Revit SP2. Try these to see how you go.

thanks Barrie,

I tried removing the Nvidia drivers and installing the latest for the FX3800...

Still no change - the drop down list above the properties box only works after I've been using Revit for a period of time.

A mouse click works fine, just the Intuos 4 pen that is the problem.

Strange, but harmless.

LOL. When you mentioned ...for a period of time, I thought I better check again. Not working this morning! How crazy.

It seems Revit can't behave as a basic windows app. It doesn't recognise any multi touch commands like panning or zooming which I thought were part of the windows shell! My 3D connex does nothing either and graphic cards are a nightmare for many. I have been ok with Nvidia except a period of pre highlight sticking around. I have an ATI Radeon HD4550 on my tablet. Revit won't let me switch on Hardware Acceleration at all. The tablet uses switchable graphics so it has intel graphics too. I wonder if Revit doesn't like the intel driver. I know it checks with windows to find out what card is used so how can I tell which card is being reported back? Just want the GPU to pick up the slack!

Bottom line is, Revit as a software package seems to be great as long as you don't use hardware ;)

I'd say the bottom line is that Revit 2011 is a lot better than 2010 in these respects ;)

Anybody using the Xp-Pen graphics tablet? Does it work well compared to Wacom?

No idea how they compare. I use Wacom Bamboo pen & touch and I love it.
