Here's an example of the shockwave-like effect in my other post. It also gives me a chance to post a straight-up Max file! I remember learning it years ago from a tutorial I had seen on the web somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

Oh, it just occured to me that I didn't make the cylinder in the file non-renderable. Don't forget that!

Same sort of thing...different approach. Shockwaves are cool!

File is in MAX 2009 format.

Neat way to do that! Mine's super simple, but your's has got some great movement.

I used the ring wave so that i could could some movement when the particles emit..mostly on the trailing bit (the inside of the ring). If you want to see something fun....animate the ringwave rotating on its z axis while its growing....and jack up the particle count.
