I want to use some DWG blocks as 2D family objects.
If I import them into a new family then explode they come as “Model lines” not “symbolic lines”

Also is there any way of placing 2D family objects into a section view? For example outlines of figures, outlines of cars, etc..

Bring the dwg into a new family but don't explode it. You can use symbolic lines and pick the lines from the DWG to recreate the element in Revit. You may also try using the TAB key to select an string of lines from the DWG when picking. Exploding the DWG may leave a lot of "trash" into your family/project.

Thanks Andre,

now is there a way of placing a 2D family into a section view?
I am just trying to place a 2D car side view into my section, but it seems I can only place "symbol" and not a "component"

what's the proper way of adding 2D blocks (cars, trees, figures, etc..) into a section or elevation when there is no need to actually have 3d objects in the model?

edit: I just realized you can import a DWG straight into the section, but is this the right way of doing this?

You can bring the dwg in section or elevation views. As I mentioned in my post above I wouldn't keep the DWG and instead would draw on top. You can also create the different views as diferent detail components families and bring (nest) them to your family views in plan and section.
