We are working with a landscape architect on a project. We are using RAC 2009 and they only have Skecthup. I know it is possible to export Revit files to Sketchup, the question is can we export only a portion of the file.

They, obviously are only interested in the shell, not the interior. I have worksets set up in the drawing, one is for exterior (walls, doors, windows etc.) and I also have 1 interior workset for each floor (1st, 2nd etc.), assuming everybody working on the model placed objects in the correct workset, can I just export the exterior workset?

Yes. Go to a 3D view, and turn off the worksets you do not want to send them under VG. Revit exports (for themost part) as "What you see is what you get" so if its not in the view, it wont export. That DOESNT include TEMPORARY Hide/Isolate (eyeglasses). They do not affect export.

But if you do it through VG or the workset dialogue, youll be all set. :)
