we've been having some issues with importing consultant backgrounds into revit that have hatches; they are spilling outside their intended boundaries. I don't know what needs to be done in the file in CAD to avoid this. Do they need to be exploded? Does their original boundary need to be included?
Has anyone found a way to get rid of the problem?

Not sure what you mean by spilling out. Do you mean that the hatches doesnt respect the boundary once loaded in Revit?
If so, chech how far the geometry is from the 0,0 in Revit

yes they aren't respecting their boundary when in revit. in cad it looks as it should.. how do i check the geometry from the 0,0 in revit???
