Would be nice if a callout detail can refer to a isometric 3d view.
Is there a way around this???

You might convert your isometric view to either an image or dwg file, import it into a drafting view., and have the callout refer to the drafting view.

Just do a callout and place it on a sheet then overlay the isometric view

You could draw a dummy callout tag as a symbol (SYMBOLS MAINTAIN PROPORTION AT ALL SCALES) and use the Vew Reference Option to create a live callout for a 3D view.

Just create a custom VIEW REFERENCE family that looks just like your normal callout head standard. Then I just created a 'Dummy Callout' line style and gave it the same weight and linetype of my callout boundary. Then used a 'detail 3' (line style set to weight of 3 and named detail 3) line for the leader.
