I've been asked this so many times, that I have to find a solution. Grid lines have a "setback distance" to the crop region so that if you move the crop region, the grids respond (especially handy for grids in linked files).

The problem is, how do you control the "setback distance" (other than changing the view scale) especially for linked files when you don't have access to the 2D/3D toggle?

I don't believe there is a "setting" that you can control the set-back distace from the view edge. I've never heard of one anyway.

As to controlling the grids in the linked file, that is what copy/monitor was meant to do. This allows you to have a "live version of the grids in your file for control, while they are "monitoring" the originals in the linked file.

i'm trying to find a link to it, but i know there was a good little "tutorial" video discussing the usage of the copy/monitor. it was more of a crash course then a tutorial, but good none the less. if i manage to find it i'll edit this post and link it.
