How does one go about creating an end return of a handrail?

Use a custom baluster family as the end post.

Hmmm. OK. What's the method of getting it to connect to the hand rail?

What type of return are you looking for? If the rail just returns to the wall, you can always just draw the rail sketch line so that it returns to the wall. This method works best, though, if you have no offset on the rail, i.e. the sketch line for the rail runs right down the center of the rail profile.

That's a helpful insight into how revit draws the railings. I'm thinking about the outboard railing that i would like to return to a vertical post.

Attached is an example revit file with a stair and railing with extensions created using custom balusters.

We also developed a custom end condition baluster with a rail return built in.
