Subscription cost in Canada haven't changed last 3-4 years, CDN$ 800, 50% savings over upgrades I would say.

In portugal, you get a new license (without volume discounts) for over 9k USD (7k€).
The yearly renewal is about 1300USD (1k€).
9000AU=4500€=6000USD... You shouldn't complain!
From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28nominal%29_per_capita)site (IMF based), the GDP nominal is:
Portugal=21.082
US=45.725
AUS=43.163
And for that, I don't even consider calculate the Revit price ratio based on the GDP... You guys are so lucky!

Subscription renewal in OZ: ~ AU$1,300 per seat.
Just renewed my single Revit Arch subscription in the UK
currently 690 GBP (incl tax) per annum (1031 US$, 1561 AU$, 770 EU)
However I chose to go with a 3 year deal which gives 10% off

What happens if you don't continue your subscription? Can you upgrade later? Can you skip a year?

750 euro's a year, here in the Netherlands.
new seat between 5500 en 6000 approx depending on stand alone or network license. ex VAT that is
if you let your subscribtion go out, then you end up paying a renewal fee. This tends to be as least as much as you would have paid for your subscription renewal and a bit more.
Once you are hooked your are..... (fill in what find appropriate)
I stick to hooked since I am quite happy with Revit.

Thanks for the global overview!
Yes they make you pay for every upgrade between your current one and the latest so the $5k was from V8 to 2009 including every one in between.I guess if you wait long enough, you just buy a new one :)
