Does anyone have a material for perforated metal or know the best way to create one?? The two ways I can think of are with a texture map of an image of perforated metal or by putting a bunch of voids in a solid piece of metal.

Perforated metal is easily set up as a rendering material indeed you'll find a couple in the stock materials library if you hunt about.

In straight forward drawn views a perforated metal material will not show that which is behind it, say a screened balcony, will not show the door to the boundary. Depending on exactly what you need you can add the window with detail lines behind a tight crosshatch, or as you suggest make holes in your sheet material. The most accurate option will be to follow the advice given in Dean Camlin's thread on trellssing and make a fine mesh model that way and run it as a railing.

Hope that helps
