Does anyone know if I am on the right track in trying to weave a flue through a fire place. I am using a sweep blend with dimension on the path and offset of profile to front and back.

Without knowing how you eventually want it to flex, it is hard to say. Swept blends were added to allow something other than a straight path between the two profiles. If you're wanting to weave it via a curved path or a spline, then I think you're on the correct path.

If, on the other hand, you want a straight path then use the blend tool instead. This will allow you to keep your top and bottom parallel to the level and the rest of the surfaces, and will be easier to constrain to achieve what you've got modeled currently.
