Join Geometry - Modeling

Using the join geometry tool, it graphically 'joins' the elements but they are still separate. I guess I was expecting something more like Union (acad). How do I accomplish this.
Actually I could use a good 3D modeling reference in Revit. I'm stumbling creating what I need and know there's a better way. Thanks.

you actually can't join them into a single object. As you noticed, they will be graphically joined but will be seperate objects, which lets you edit them at the base level and not lose information. It's kind of like the modifier stack in Max if you've ever used that...
