Civil 3D 2009 point group question

I had some GPS shots downloaded and converted into a shp file. I then used autodesk map menu to bring the shape file into an autocad civil 3d dwg. My problem is that I am trying to convert the points I converted in the dwg to a point group so that I can create my contours. Do I have to do anything else to them in order for Civil 3D to recognize them as points to convert them into a point group. Thanks,
