When creating families I get a 2D or 3D toggle at the ends. How does this affect creating geometry. Thanks.

Hey Bryan,
The 3D extent of the line defines the extent of the plane itself. Any other views that cross that plane will show the line as well. The 2D extent of the line defines the graphical representation of the plane only...
So, if you had a grid plan going through your design and you wanted to pull the grid lines back so they do not intersect the design, for clarity sake, you would use the 2D line extents to move the grids out of the way. If you used the 3D extents of the lines to do this you would actually be removing the grid lines from your design envelope, not what you want to do.
I hope this makes some sense, i've never tried to type it out before...

The OP was asking about 2D vs. 3D in the case of the family editor. I don't know of any effect that has, really, because reference planes in a family will show up in a project as lines that appear when aligning or dimensioning to that family, but the line will appear to only go to the extent of the family's geometry itself.
