* Isolate your group in a 3D view
* Export the view in the SAT CAD format
* Start a generic family
* Import the SAT file into the family

cool!!
this is handy if you need something like a small deck frame to work on outside the project. and still have it come in the right place

First of all, using such a technique is going to have several implications:
1. You will have changed everything in that "group" to being a generic object, which means it wont behave accordingly for lineweights, visibility, scheduling, etc.
2. As youve discovered, youre going to face problems with updating, losing associated references/constraints/dimensions/attachments.
What exactly are you trying to achieve? What is the group of originally? A model group or a detail group? Why do you want it to be a family instead?
If you just want it editable *in another family* try saving the group to file, and reloading it when you edit it. If its a detail group, then turn it in to symbolic lines in a family.
But tell us what youre after and why and we can probbaly point you in the right direction. :)
