Hatch/Pattern Vignette

Is there a way to show just a portion of a hatch/wall pattern, like a vignette of it, WITHOUT using split face? It also has to have the ability to be tagged.

I realize i could use filled regions, but that seems like an odd solution for some reason...

No, and if you do use the split face tool be aware that this is a modeling move meaning you'll see the change in material in every view including 3D
