Hi all,

I'm having some issues with the family template, "Generic Model wall based". I create my geometry and everything looks great. As soon as I load it into a project and try to place it on a wall, I get an issue.

The default wall sizes are 5", 6", 8" & a 12" wall. If I place my family on the 6" wall, everything is great. However, if I place it on a 5" 8", or the 12", my part gets distorted. By distorted I mean my family part won't attach to these sized walls properly, some of it may be going into the wall or the dimension length will be different.

It's confused me beyond anything and I've brought it up to other Revit users within my firm (we're all starting out with Revit Families) and we can't really figure out what's going on.

Should I not be using this generic model template? I noticed if I open a pre-built family which came with Revit MEP, the walls in those files are not the same as those in the generic wall based one. It's a simple extrusion, and yet their files work.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like you've got issues with the constraints that are defined in the Family Definition

A few questions:

Why are you using a Wall-Hosted Family Template for an MEP Family? If you want to use this content on Elements in a Linked File, then you'll need it to be Face-Hosted.
Why not upload the Family File here? You haven't given that much od an explanation or provided screen captures, so send some more detail.Cheers,
Kyle B

A few of the other Revit users and I had a little netmeeting. We've determined, much you stated Kyle, why don't we use the Face-Hosted files. So yes, from now on that is how ours will be. We are only on our third week of Revit family content so I apologize for the ignorance on my part.

Thanks for the response. I will follow up with a post that includes my file so you can see what I was referring to.

The wall based templates should either be removed from MEP or the program should recognise linked walls as walls. Causes way too much confusion.

It does cause confusion, most of us in this firm are self taught with limited professional training. So we get to find out how to do things the long way :-)

Either way. Thanks for the responses.
