Applying a material to floor based family

I am creating a depressed slab w/ turndown family and everything works well except for the material. Currently I have it set do default assuming this would pick up on the models material, but iy just stays white. I tried changing the family cat. to foundation, but still nothing. Does anybody have any ideas.
