Callout View Shape

Is there any way to produce a callout reference that is not rectangular??

In a word... no.
The only thing you could do is adjust the callout border corner radius to give a more circular appearance.

Nothing to do about in the originating view but in the referenced view I use Masking Regions to isolate just the area I want to describe. Works well though I have to manually hide some annoations and the like.
