Does anyone have a creative way to create accurate construction zones in Revit that can produce a 3D Navis or 3D DWG output? In the world of construction we often build large projects in zones. A floor is not assembled in one effort but often in multiple efforts that require us to break up a floor plan into many pieces. This would include slabs, beams, column and walls. I want to be able to take a finished design model and not have to re-model it but instead use a tool, such as the 3D section tool, to cut up the model into different 3D views that would translate out to 3D Navis models or 3D DWGs. The only problem I am running into is the 3D section tool is not accurate and you can not snap it to any element.

Any creative thoughts or am I completely missing something?

Try publishing a 3D DWF from Revit. File>Publish DWF

You can open the dwf with Autodesk Design Review (freeware)

and you can turn on/off walls, slabs, beams etc.

You can ( I believe ) get 3D dimensions, do digital mark-ups, etc.

Do a search for Autodesk Design Review or DWF.

Otherwise, you can open any 3D view in Revit, use a scope box to crop it
down to show just the elements you need, turn on/off categories, etc.
and then Export to Autocad 3D.

Also, take a look at Vico Office and Building Explorer--two 3rd party apps
which can harness Revit's model/database for 4D and 5D visualization
and scheduling/estimating.

Best way would be to use phasing for staged construction. Then you can create 3D section views, plans and sections for export with only elements from that stage / phase. It will also allow previous work to be shown if required or set overrides to show future also, which will export to diffrent layers in autocad.

Hope this helps

If you need to break it onlyfor 3D view purpose use a section. Then in the 3D view show that section (View - Orient - To Other View....)
You will better control the extent of the 3D view.
naviswork has a tool for that call timeline. But a big floorplate will need to be broken up in piece. Usually structural will do that anyway

Thanks dhurtubise. That's perfect. And I can be precise.

...one more. Can you control the height of the section cut? Can I cut a single floor only?

Thanks again

Or can I create a filter that hides all the other floors?

If you are using the orient to view option Daniel suggested you can open the section prior to orienting the 3D view and adjust the crop region to show the height you want.

Or can I create a filter that hides all the other floors?

You can do that but that requires assigning a value to a parameter for each slab or creating different slab types. Either way the cropped section approach is probably easier. I woul donly use this approach if the zone boundaries you need to show aren't defined by a simple plane in a section.

The Scope Box will also do the trick.
