View Full Version : Visibility Toggle

There needs to be a quicker way to turn on or off the visibility of an item or group of items. My idea is to add this to the hide/isolate tool. The following options could be added to the dialog box: "Add to toggle group" and "Remove from toggle group". The items assigned to the toggle group should then be able to be toggled off and on with a menu bar icon button and a keyboard shortcut such as "VT". The "reset" button in the dialog box should restore the visibility of all items but leave the toggle group intact for future use. And, as long as I'm asking, I may as well get greedy. (Translation: the following would be nice to have but I don't consider it as high of a priority as the basic functionality.) The tool should be view specific and allow for each view to have its own set of items to be toggled on/off. If the tool is implemented with view specific groups, then there should be a drop down list "Use toggle group from another view" which would allow you to pick a group from another view to use in the current view.
EDIT: This issue has come up again so I came back here to try and add a poll. It seems that a poll can't be added in "edit" mode. Would one of the moderators please add a poll if possible. Thanks in advance.
EDIT 2: Now that we have on-screen visibility toggle icons in 7.0 for other items, I am revising this request to include an on-screen icon for this feature. Still can't see a way to add a poll in edit mode. Moderators?

Or for the category of the item...
I think it should be in the right-click menu.
highlight the item, then right-click and select category visible (yes/no)

I agree with the right click option that is more faster and intuitive.

Ditto.
The ExpressTools Layer on/off, Freeze/Thaw utility was and still is a HUGE time saver in ACAD.

Got my vote for right click context menu - with an instance or group switch.
I use worksets to do a lot of this. Can use them in other views and whatever. Learn how to use worksets and they work great, as a work-around until maybe something like your idea could be used. Would be much faster than using worksets and the right click option would be great.

What about just using the view template tools already in Revit?
If I think I'll be using settings more than a couple of times I find it pretty quick to create a vew template and then apply it to any view. You can include these view templates as part of your default templates and then they are available by transferring standards.
(Edit) Just reread the post and realized you are probably looking for specific items to be turned off as opposed to an entire family category?)

Question: Does editing a post make it appear in a search for "new posts"? I have edited my original post twice. This thread has not received any new posts after the edits so I'm not sure if editing triggers "new" status. I don't know if the lack of replies means that my edits merely haven't triggered a response or if they are simply not being seen. I cannot check this myself since the edited post is not a "new post" to me the next time I log on. My last edit was yesterday. Did this thread show up in anybody's search for new posts before I added this reply today?

No it doesn't show up as a new post.
Thanks for the response Steve. Is this the intended behavior? Seems more logical to me to have edited posts show up as new.
Also, what about the issue of adding a poll in edit mode (addressed in my first edit above)? I have looked over the "edit post" screen from top to bottom a couple of times and can't see a way to do it. I keep thinking that I must be missing something really obvious. Am I right that it can't be done in edit mode or should I be prepared to be really embarrassed when you show me the simple trick that I have been missing?

...Is this the intended behavior?...Yes. I see your point but at the same time if I fix a spelling error, I don't really want the post to show as new since it would be confusing to folks who just read it and didn't notice the spelling error the first time. If you are adding substance to a post/thread and want it read as new, then make a new post. If you are adding substance within the first few minutes of posting initially then add to the existing post. This is what I do generally.
To take your thinking a little further, maybe having the option to define the post as "new" when you edit the post would be nice? I can look into it.
Polls can be added to threads you start via THREAD TOOLS.

Now that I know that this is the intended behavior I will probably resort to adding a post saying "See edited post above." or something like that.

Arrrrrrrrgh! :banghead:
Thanks again.

Poll added. Vote early and vote often.
P.S. To anyone interested in adding a poll to one of their old wishlist items, the "Thread Tools" drop down does not appear on the screen when you are on the "Edit Post" page. It is only available from the main page of the post. You can add your poll from there.

Temporary hide seems bizzre, Why we cant print with an object (not category) off is beyond me? as we dont use layers that we can something to non printing/visible layer this is a very necessary additon - gets my vote.

It must be a very difficult if not impossible feature to enable otherwise I am sure it would have been done by now. It would save users many many hours of frustrations and workarounds.

I dont believe that, or your tongue in your cheek a little ;) ? revit must be the only piece of software i have ever used that lets you see something on screen then not print it.......... . Including the print screen button in windows!!! even that can do it.
