We're going to start detailing furniture and would like opinions on the best way of doing it.
I would prefer a way were furniture is modelled as 3D elements in the project and not just 2D elements.

Any opinions ?

I like to create an additional phase ("Types and Legends") after Existing and New Construction. I place the 3-d components in this phase and detail them as required.

What is nice about this method is I have the full use of sections/ detail/ callout/ elevation markers. The legend views do not support the use of these tools.

Thank you for the prompt reply. My question is more oriented in finding out if you need to detail a counter, you use normal plans and sections or drafting (and do all in 2D)?

My ideas is to use the model as a base and then detail on top.

To illustrate the type of drawing I'm referring to see attached PDF.

I lean more towards using actual plans, sections, elevations... and then provide the level of detail on top if needed. See attached.

All the casework, ceilings, walls...are modeled except for things like lines representing base trim.

Again thanks for the reply and for the pdf.

You got me interested in the 3rd phase. Could you elaborate a little more on the advantages of that 3rd phase? And how that relates with detailing. Do you filter by phase?

Thank you

Nice drawings. I'd be interested to see that file. Any chance you can pull that sheet and views to a new project and share?

Millwork elevations are done in the model, using model components and very little drafting. The section details are typically drafting views for typical conditions (typical base/upper cabinet), and then live details where special conditions occur. These live details are either placed in an enlarged plan of the area with that millwork, or directly in the millwork elevation view. We typically never show a millwork detail section line in the overall plan view.

Millwork elevations are pretty much NEVER done as drafting views in our office. Things change too much with millwork to NOT model them and have all the annotations and views coordinated correctly.

Patricks is correct. All the millwork in the posted image was done using model components. I used graphic overrides/ filters when needed to achieve the graphical look I was shooting for. There is very little drafting done.

Greg,
The file is too large to post, even as a zip file. Do you have an FTP or similar that I might upload the file to?
